Illegal Immigration Charts & Statistics :

For centuries, Royal Kingdom of Thailand has been one of the prime destinations for transnational migration. According to the Bangkok Census of 1909, foreign nationals immigrating into the country were far greater than the natives leaving the country.  This census reported that the largest groups of Thai immigrants were the Chinese traders and labourers. People belonging to other nationality such as Indians, Japanese, Westerners and natives of Lao, Cambodia, Burma and other neighboring countries also migrated in large numbers to this beautiful country. Thailand’s sparse population and lack of properly demarcated borders were the prime reasons for encouraging illegal immigration.

Although, the immigration act was drafted under the reign of King Rama V and was modified subsequently during 1927 and 1979, it could not curb the influx of illegal immigrants. The 1993 Immigration census data states that the prime transnational immigrants into Thailand were tourists, migrant workers, trafficked persons, asylum seekers and refugees. An estimated 6,300,000 tourists entered Thailand in 1994 while 22,101 professionals have been hired to work in the country. Illegal immigration statistics of Thailand indicate that there are around 525,480 illegal workers present in the country. There are absolutely no records indicating the number of children and women being trafficked into the country.  Another main group of immigrants are the asylum seekers and refugees. Around 74,449 Burmese refugees have been housed in various refugee camps along the border.

As per the illegal immigration statistics, a majority of around 300,000 illegal immigrants are from Burma, 100,000 from China and 50,000 from South-Asia. Most of these immigrants settle as unskilled labor, construction workers, domestic labor, factory employees and even work as helpers in rice fields.
