The province has two extremely popular marine national parks -- Ko Tarutao and Ko Phetra. Another national park is close to the Malaysian border and it is a freshwater swamp. This national park is known as Thale Ban National Park.
Satun province is divided into 7 districts or Amphoe which are further subdivided into 36 districts or Tambaon and 277 villages or Muban. Satun town is the only town in the province while it does have 5 townships. Satun also has some 60 offshore islands which form the province.
Tarutao National Park is the first marine park to be established in Thailand in 1974 and it is made up of 50 islands. Out of these islands Ko Tarutao is the biggest island. Ko Tarutao was used as a prison for political prisoners. The island has many beautiful bays.
Just west of Ko Tarutao are the famous islands of Ko Adang and Ko Rawi. The island are well-known for their beautiful beaches and in one of the neighboring islands of Ko Li Pe, you can see a village of sea gypsies and coral reefs.
Thale Ban National Park is located in Muang and Khuan Don Districts. The Park has a beautiful and scenic lagoon which is surrounded by high mountains. In the Park there is a small and medium sized waterfall.
A visit to the Mu Ko Phetra National Park is a must with the park spread across the provinces of Satun and Trang. It has a long coastline with several offshore islands. |
