The temple is situated east of Wat Phra Kaeo and is known for its historical importance. Wat Phra That is among the several historic temples located inside the Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park. The ruins of the temple are present just opposite the Kamphaeng Phet National Museum.
Construction of the Wat Phra That is almost similar to that of Wat Phra Kaeo. The architectural plan of the temple has been designed in a rectangular shape with all the buildings inside the temple constructed along the east-west axis parallel to the city walls. Sandstone and bricks were used for constructing the walls and buildings of the temple.
The layout of the buildings and the entire structure of the temple are considered to be one of the rarest combinations of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya styles, also known as the Kamphaeng Phet style of architecture. A major notable attraction is the main Chedi inside the temple that is made up of a mixture of laterite and bricks, with a base that is 15 meters wide. Built in Singhalese style, this Chedi is bell-shaped with a square shaped lion adorned base. Chedi of the temple was constructed during the period when Singhalese or Sri Lankan form of Buddhism was prevalent in Thailand. The Chedi is surrounded by different columns and is held by a relic. The temple is presided over by a large pagoda that is also built of sandstone and bricks. This pagoda is surrounded by a Vihara, which is made of sandstone walls having gates on either side.
