Located in the heart of Khorat Plateau, Khon Kaen Province is a
prime commercial, educational and administrative center of northeastern
Thailand. This is one of the largest and rapidly expanding provinces located on
the banks of Chi River. Khon Kaen Province is widely known for its rich natural
resources, dinosaur fossil excavations, serene lakes, quality silks, glorious
waterfalls and unusual flora and fauna.
Phu Wiang National Park is the
most popular tourist destination for adventure lovers in Khon Kaen. Numerous
fossils of Carnosaurus, Siamosaurus, Siamotyrannus and other species dating
back to Jurassic Period have been excavated in this park. There are several
delightful places in the park including wild flowers, dark caves with
prehistoric paintings, glorious waterfalls such as Namtok Tat Fa and Namtok
Thap Phaya Suea.
Another important destination is
Phu Pam National Park known for its lush green forests, waterfalls and dark
caves that are home for stalactite and stalagmites formations, prehistoric
paintings, glittering stones and bats. Jungle trekking and camping is permitted
in this park. Other important national parks in Khon Kaen are Phu Kao-Phu Pham
Kham National Park and Tham Pha Phuang Forest Park. The Nam Phong National Park
in the Nong Ruea district of Khon Koea is known for its deciduous dipterocarp
and dry evergreen forests that are home for quite a number of rare species of
flora and fauna. The beautiful Ubolratana Lake surrounds this park. The
magnificent Ubolratana dam built over this lake is the largest multi-purpose
dam in the northeast Thailand.
Other popular destinations in
this region are bestowed with beautiful beaches such as Bang Sean II, Hat Chom
Thong and Hat Sawan. Adventure tourists can entertain themselves with various
water sports available such as swimming, water bicycle, banana boat and
scooter.
Apart from these, Khon Khon
greets tourists with many more interesting destinations such as Tortoise
Village, Thai Water Buffalo Conservation Village, Pattaya II fresh water pond,
Ban Khok Sanga King Cobras Village, Chang Kra Orchids, ancient monuments,
historical sites, legendary places, marvelous temples, city museums and
education centers.
The principal industry in Khon
Kaen is production of high quality mudmee silk. The annual Silk and Phuk Sieo
Festival held in December is celebrated in its honor. This is the best time to
visit Khon Kaen where tourists can become familiar with the local delights,
folk entertainment and Isaan folk music. Dok Khun Siang Khaen Festival
celebrated during April is known for boat racing contests, local dramatic arts,
floral cart processions, and food contests.
There are wide ranges of
international hotels and restaurants spread around the city for the comfort of
tourists visiting this region. Khon Kaen is located at a distance of 449
kilometers from the capital city. Thai Airways operates direct flights to the
province from Bangkok. Tourists can even board a direct train from Bangkok’s
Hua Lamphong Railway Station. Alternatively, Transport Company Limited operates
air-conditioned and non air-conditioned bus services from Bangkok’s Mochit 2
Bus Terminal.
