Spread over an area of 721 square kilometers, Salween National Park is located on the banks of Salween River and is present 154 kilometers south of Mae Hong Son on the Thai-Myanmar border. The most interesting aspect of this river is that it originates in Tibet, passes through China and Burma and then finally enters into Thailand, thus covering a total distance of more than 3,000 kilometers. The entire path followed by this river is considered to be the home for more than 7,000 species of plants, 80 species of animals and various kinds of fish. Some of these are, in fact, rare and have been included in the list of endangered species, thus making this region as one of the most biologically diverse temperate ecosystems in the world. So as preserve this diverse habitat, UNESCO has declared the entire region as World Heritage Site in 2003.
Salween National Park is widely known for its diverse ecosystems and rich natural habitats. Tourists visiting this park can relish the experience of these delightful and mystic surroundings by taking a boat ride along the Salween River.
Accommodation is available for tourists at the park headquarters. The best time to visit this park and enjoy a boat ride on the Salween River is during the months of March and April. At this time, the water levels in the river are low, thereby exposing the sandy beaches. Since, nature will be in its full bloom, the sceneries along the riverbanks tend to be extremely captivating.
