Mukdahan Province is located on the bank of the Mae Khong River opposite Suwannakhet in
Laos, 642 kilometers from Bangkok. It is a quiet province bordering the
mighty Mekong River. Home to an
interesting mixture of cultures from various tribes since ancient times, this
rural area of the northeast is a land
of fantastic natural rock formations, beautiful sceneries and has an
interesting mix of cultures and traditions. Mukdahan is well known for
producing good quality Mudmee silk and pillows and sweet tamarind fruit. The town also hosts the Indochine Market,
a bustling weekend market selling a whole range of items from Thailand, Laos
and Vietnam.
Wat Si Mongkhon Tai located on the bank of the Mekong River is the temple where Mukdahan's ancient and
most revered image of Buddha, the Phra Chao Ong Luang, is enshrined. Amphur
Wan Yai is home to Wat
Ban Song Khon Church, one of the largest and most beautiful
Catholic churches in Asia. Luang Pho
Yai a Buddha image sitting in the gesture of giving the First Sermon, is placed
on a rock plateau within the precincts of Wat Phuttho Thammatharo.
Phu Mu Forest Park is a low hill with a large plateau in Amphoe Nikhom
Kham Soi. Earlier, it used to be the home of wild boars but now is a location
from where a splendid view of Mukdahan Province can be appreciated. Mukdahan National
Park, a deciduous forest with
unusual rock formations, is a must see. The most striking area of the
park is Phu Pha Thoep, an area littered with peculiar shaped rocks. Phu Tham
Phra is the largest mountain in this park and the site of a waterfall and cave
full of small wooden Buddha images.
Kaeng Kabao is a popular
spot for locals to sit by the Mekong River. A rock plateau is a favorite
location for relaxation. During the dry season small islands and beaches emerge
making this stretch of river a very beautiful spot, especially at sunset.
Although there is no
direct train from Bangkok to Mukdahan Province, tourists can take a Bangkok-Ubon
Ratchathani train and then take a connecting bus to Mukdahan. Tourists can also
fly from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani or Nakhon Phanom and then take a
