Nakhon Phanom Province is a beautiful
province in the upper north east, located 740
kilometers from Bangkok and is situated on the bank of the Mae Khong River. The
seldom visited Nakhon Phanom Province is surrounded by mountainous terrain, has a beautiful riverside location and
extraordinary view of the mountains across the river.
Best known for its panoramic view
of the Mekong River and the rugged mountains of Laos, it also has a religious
heritage centering on the province's Phra That Phanom, the most sacred
religious structure in the Northeast. It
contains a relic of the Buddha, considered to be His collarbone. The decorative top of the Phra That Phanom is
made of gold. Another significant
tourist destination is the Phra That Renu, housing the gold images of
Lord Buddha. It is considered to be a smaller replica of Phra That Phanom. The
district is home to many Phu Thai people, an indigenous group that excels in
the traditional craft of weaving silk and cotton. A large handicraft market is
held every Saturday near Phra That Renu Nakhon temple. Other prominent temples
include the Phra That Ta-Uthain, with its pagoda containing shrines of several
Buddhist saints brought from Burma; Phra That Sri Khoon, bearing close
resemblance to Phra That Phanom; and Wat Sila Mongkol, with a museum that holds
holy relics.
The Phu Langka National Park, located in the Langka Mountain Range, and
comprises of two waterfalls – a small 4-tiered waterfall known as Namtok Tat
Kham and the Namtok Tat Pho, which is equally beautiful. This is the point
where the rivers originating from Phu Langka mountain join together to give
rise to the Huai Kham river, which further cascades through 4 steps of the fall
before continuing on its way to the Mae Khong river. Riverside Promenade,
strategically located alongside the Mae Khong River gives a good view
especially during sunrise and sunset. Camping, trekking and bird watching
facilities are available in these parks. Biking tours through the city’s
tourist destinations are a common feature in this place.
The famous Illuminated Boat Procession is held annually in October or
November wherein the boats are decorated with colored lights. This
spectacular sight marks the event, which
represents the traditional Loi Krathong ceremony of the northeast people, in
which boat races are held between Thai and Laos teams in order to
promote harmony and good cross-border relations.
This place is well connected with
all neighboring provinces. Everyday non-air conditioned and air-conditioned bus
services are available from Bangkok's
Northern Bus Terminal (Mochit 2 Bus Terminal) to Nakhon Phanom. Many direct
flights are also available from Bangkok.
