The Chiang Saen National Museum displays excavated artifacts and ancient sculptures with inscriptions, locally-made Chiang Saen-style Buddha images and Lanna Thai artifacts. The exhibits also include Lanna-style objects of daily use such as pots, weapons, baskets, fish traps, fish nets, and cooking vessels. There are also exhibits that are dedicated to the Thai Yai, Thai Lu and other hill tribes such as their indigenous clothing, tools, musical instruments, opium-smoking accessories and even ornaments. There is a book stall in the museum from where the tourists can purchase books on the history, religion, and culture of the region. The main purpose of displaying these exhibits is to emphasize the Lanna history, and to provide a glimpse into the lives and lifestyles of the human settlements from the pre-historic period to present times.
The museum is divided into three distinct sections. The first section speaks volumes about the history of the settlement including archeological excavations, Lanna Buddha images, and northern Thai ceramics. The second section focuses on the monuments from the Chiang Saen town and its surrounding areas while the third section emphasizes the importance of the Maekhong River, folk art and the life and lifestyles of the northern hill tribes.
