Sirindhorn Museum

Sirindhorn Museum and Phu Kum Khao Dinosaur Excavation Site is located in Sahatsakhan district of Kalasin Province. It is situated at the foothill of Phu Kum Khao in the Wat Sakkawan. The museum and the dinosaur excavation site are only accessible if you take the Kalasin - Sahatsakhan Highway for 25 kilometers. The museum is around 2 kilometers before you reach Sahatsakhan.

Phrakhru Wichit Sahatsakhan, the Abbot of Wat Sakkawan, discovered large bones in the compound of the temple in 1970. He did not know that the bones were actually dinosaur fossils and he kept them in the temple. However, in 1978, it was only when geologist from Mineral Resources Department checked the bones, was it discovered that they were fossils.

Then, in 1980, a Thai-French group of geologists took the three bones kept in Wat Sakkawan to conduct further studies on them. This study allowed the scientists to figure out that the fossils belonged to a Sauropod.

Thereafter, in 1994, the area was subjected to systematic excavation, which revealed number of dinosaur fossils in the rock formation of Sao Khrua. These fossils date back to the early Cretaceous period, which was over 130 million years ago. More than 700 fossils were recovered from the excavation site and they all belonged to seven dinosaurs.

Even a fossil of a new-found species of an ancient fish was discovered in perfect condition from the site. This fossil is belongs to fish known as Lepidotes and it is around 30 to 60 centimeters in length and it is assumed that the Lepidotes lived in the Mesozoic era. It is believed that the Sirindhorn Museum and Phu Kum Khao Dinosaur Excavation Site was once a big swamp which suddenly went dry and causing the death of the Lepidotes.

Phu Kum Khao is one of the largest concentrations of dinosaur fossils in Thailand and you can see the fossils in Sirindhorn Museum every day from 8.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m.

In addition, you can also admire the Buddha image in Wat Sakkawan. This image is known as Luangpho Bandan Ritthiphon and it is from the Dvaravati era. The posture of the image is in subduing Mara posture and is highly revered by the locals.
