The famous Mekong River runs for around 70 kilometers along the province's eastern border and is its lifeline. However, other water sources also exist like Huai Chanod, Huai Muk and Huai Bung Ee, which are all streams. These streams are narrow and tend to get very shallow during the hot dry season.
The province is home to eight tribes spread across 7 districts. Each tribe has its own tradition and culture. However, there is more to see in Mukdahan than this. The province is also home to the most revered image in the area. The Buddha image is enshrined in Wat Si Mongkhon Tai.
Wat Si Mongkhon Tai is located on the banks of Mekong River right near the immigration check point to Laos. Within the compound of the temple, you can find shops that sell souvenirs and products from Laos.
According to a legend, the founder of Mukdahan, Thao Kinnaree discovered two images under a Boddhi tree. One of the images was made from iron and Wat Si Mongkhon Tai was built to house it. However, the image sank into the ground so the second image was house in the temple.
Just opposite the temple is an old Boddhi tree, which is a popular place for visitors to have their fortune read.
