Phitsanulok Provice:
Shrine of King Naresuan the Great
| Also known as Song Kwae City and situated on the banks of Maenam Nam and Maenam Kwae Noi, the naturally beautiful province of Phitsanulok is strategically located in the northern part of Thailand. |
There are several important places inside the province that provide visitors with an opportunity to explore some vital parts of Thai history. One such place is the Shrine of King Naresuan the Great, one of the most popular places inside the city of Phitsanulok.
There are several historical facts that glorify the importance of Phitsanulok province in Thai history. To be precise, this place was a training ground for many Ayutthaya Kings. Apart from this, Phitsanulok is the birth place of King Naresuan the Great, the legendary king who belonged to the Ayutthaya dynasty and ruled Thailand between 1590 and 1605. He was the one who had declared the independence of Ayutthaya Kingdom from Burmese rule in 1584. Phitsanulok was a major place where recruitment of troops occurred when King Naresuan waged battle against the Burmese.
In fond remembrance of this great king, Thai people constructed a beautiful temple in the year 1961 on the banks of Maenam Nan and named it Shrine of King Naresuan the Great. The temple is located inside the compound of Phitsanulok Phittayakom School opposite the main town, which is the site for Chan Palace where King Naresuan the Great was born and brought up. This shrine represents the utmost respect of Thais for their beloved king who liberated the nation from Burmese rule.
Present inside the shrine is a large seated image of King Naresuan the Great depicting the king pouring holy water from a golden container, a symbolic representation indicating the independence of Ayutthaya from Myanmar.
