Klai Kangwon Palace

Klai Kangwon Palace was built by King Rama VII for his queen, Queen Rambai Barni. Even today the palace is still home to the current king and his queen when they visit Prachauab Khiri Khan and its neighboring provinces. When the royal family is not in residence, Klai Kangwon Palace is open to public.

The palace is designed in Spanish style by Prince Iddhidesarn Kridara. The prince was a graduate from L'Ecole Des Beaux Art and was a director of the Depart of Fine Art. The site was prepared for construction in October 1926 and the construction started in September 1927. The construction of the palace finished in April 1929.

The palace does not have a throne room for audiences. It has a feel of a large house rather than a palace and that is why it is named Klai Kangwon Palace meaning Far from Worries. Basically the palace is a group of three mansions facing the sea. The largest of the mansions is Phra Tamnak Piamsuk with Tamnak Plukkasem and Tamnak Noi on either side.

Klai Kangwon Palace has importance in Thai history as this is the place where King Prajadhipok abdicated complete monarchy in favor of constitution monarchy. In 1935, the king felt that he would be unable to continue as king and abdicated the throne to live in England until his death in 1941.

The ground of Klai Kangwon Palace has an Italian garden with topiary trees and bushes, stone sculptures from Bali, a sundial and nautical items.
