        Any visit to Thailand will be incomplete without a visit to Ban Ta Klang Elephant village in the province of Surin. The village comprises of people from the ancient tribe of Kui, and they have been rearing these gentle giants for hundreds of years.

        This area is highly conducive for elephants as it has the plants and grass that elephants like eating. During the Ayutthaya period, the people from the village used to send the elephant feed to the king so that they were not recruited for wars. This was like a form of tax against being drafted.

        Before war broke out in neighboring Cambodia, the Kui mahouts used to enter into Cambodia to capture wild elephants. However, now this has stopped. But the war in Cambodia has done nothing to stop the rearing of elephants in Ban Ta Klang Elephant village as the older elephants being giving birth to calves each year. More....

Surin Travel Guide : Surin National Museum        Surin National Museum has recently opened its doors. It is located in Surin town and has exhibits that cover 5 main categories. If you want to learn more about Surin province, this is a place not to be missed under any circumstances.

       The geography section of the museum covers exhibits and information relating to the regional climate, soil sciences, water resources, wildlife, forests, national parks and geology of the area. In addition, this is area of the museum that covers the ancient as well as modern practices of rice farming because the province of Surin is best suited area in Thailand for growing the famous Jasmine rice.

        One section of the museum is devoted to archaeology. However, it is not at all boring because you can find out how the people of this area lived during pre-historic times. In addition, you can admire many antiques that have been unearthed from different eras, namely Dvaravati, Khmer and Ayutthaya-Lanchang periods.
