The Uthai Thani Old Town

Located approximately 220 kilometers from the capital city of Bangkok is one of the most remarkable and enchanting provinces in Thailand known as Uthai Thani.

Considered as the home to some of most endangered animal and bird species on the planet, Uthai Thani is one of most ancient and flourishing provinces of Thailand. One can get a glimpse of the history and development of Uthai Thani province by visiting the old city of Uthai Thani.

The old city of Uthai Thani is located at Ban Uthai Thani Kao in Amphoe Nong Chang. This was the place that was once a bustling township and a flourishing commercial and trade center during the Ayutthaya period. However, historical records indicate that civilization flourished around this region during the Sukhothai period too. Archaeological excavations that were done in and around the city revealed ruins of several temples that were built during the late Ayutthaya period. Important among these include the Wat Chaeng, Wat Hua Mak, Wat Yang, Wat Kuti and the Wat Hua Mueang.

Among these, Wat Chaeng remains almost intact. However, certain portions of the temple were destroyed by the Burmese Army. Inside the temple, one can observe a small ordination hall that has just one door. The entire construction of the temple indicates the style followed during the late Ayutthaya period. Also present in the temple is a prang that was built in 1538. The exquisite stucco relief patterns and mural paintings inside the temple indicate the craftsmanship during that period.

Old city of Uthai Thani is an interesting travel destination in Thailand for tourists who are interested in getting to know the history of this province.
