From Bangkok to the ferry

Surat Thani is the rail gateway for Samui, Phangan and Tao. These SRT trains run from Krung Thep Aphiwat to Surat Thani, with fares the booking system showed for 18 November 2026 departures:

Train Leaves Bangkok Reaches Surat Thani Fare
43 (day, diesel railcar) 07:30 16:20 THB 524, air-conditioned seat
171 (rapid) 15:10 01:11 next day Sleeper THB 654 upper, THB 724 lower
37 (special express) 16:10 01:49 next day Sleeper THB 734 upper, THB 804 lower

The overnight trains arrive in the small hours, so most travellers pick the day train or sleep in town before the morning boat. The bus from Khao San Road to Donsak pier takes about 10 hours.

Chumphon is the other mainland gateway.

A Lomprayah bus leaves its Bangkok office on Khao San Road and stops at Chumphon Pier, where you check in again with the same ticket before boarding the ferry. The whole trip to Samui is around 14 hours, with another 4 hours or so by boat to Maenam Pier. The Lomprayah bus and catamaran joint ticket from Bangkok to Koh Samui starts at THB 1,200.

From Surat Thani town, see the Surat Thani to Koh Samui ferry guide and the Bangkok to Koh Samui guide.

Any safe, big ferry to koh tao? I am coming with sensitive wife and two kids, what I hated 10 years ago - was lomprayah speedboat with a lot of vomiting. Looking for any better alternative from mailand. Please advise :)

We took the ferry to Koh Tao only a week ago. It was safe, calm, big, airconditioning, nobody vomiting. Most people were napping in their seats; you could buy beer and chips in there. I don't know if maybe things have changed, this was the first time I've ever gone to Koh Tao, but my experience tells me you don't have much to worry about.

Okay but how bad is the Koh Tao Ferry really? Like really… I have never seen so many posts about sick people, I’m very curious.

    1. cassowary-18

Could be bad if the seas are rough. But otherwise it's fine.

    2. Ostpreussen

If you go from the Chumpoon pier it's a 45 minute trip. People seem to think they're crossing the 60th parallel south. They'd get sea sick walking through a puddle.

    3. Jody_Bigfoot

We got on it the day after another sunk, storm was still raging. It was the craziest ride of my life, 10/10 would do again

Koh Phangan to Koh Samui Ferry early morning? Hey guys, I am thinking to attend full moon party in April in Koh phangan Haad rin but I will book hotel in koh samui. I can go with the ferry in evening from Koh samui to Haad rin but I want to return around 2-3am as I am not a wild party person. I want to have a good time for 3-4 hours maximum. So, are there ferries which runs at this time? as I can't find them on 12goasia website. First ferry it's showing around 7:30am.
